Boats line up for the start of a Thursday evening race

Great sailing can be enjoyed on this stretch of the River Avon between Bristol and Bath, which is the widest and straightest on the whole river – and the clearest of bank vegetation. Our sailing area is nearly a mile long - extending upriver from the clubhouse, around a corner to the Bristol to Bath Cycleway bridge. Downriver, the area is limited by the weir outside the famous Jolly Sailor public house.

We have a pleasant, modern clubhouse with great facilities, a large dinghy park and wonderful views across the river towards Kelston and the hills beyond. Dinghy races are held every Sunday between March and November and on Thursday evenings during the summer months.

Cruising sailors are encouraged to take to the water even during the races. A RYA accredited training course is run every spring for members — beginners and juniors. The river provides a challenging racing course for either novices or experienced sailors, young and old alike.

Classes sailed include the British Moth, Comet, Graduate, Laser, Lightning, Mirror and Topper. Members often take their boats to race or cruise on other waters around the South west and beyond, and the annual club excursion to Studland Bay, Dorset, for a sea sailing weekend is always well supported.

Bristol Avon SC isn't just all about sailing and boats though - it has a great social side too, with events organised throughout the year to provide a true family feel. Read on and then come and see us to find out even more about this great sport and family activity.

New Website

 Hi all,

Some of you may already know that I’ve been working on a new upgraded website that will be on the 1st December. The site will fix the problems many people are getting and it will also add some new features (listed below).

I’ve added membership numbers to the registration process to increase security but unfortunately because of this I cannot transfer your user account automatically. You will be given a membership number at membership renewal. When the site goes live after renewal please use this number to register on the new site to create a new account (I’ll email everyone the day the site goes online).

Sorry for any inconvenience but hopefully this new site will make lots of things easier, particularly uploading photos. It might take me a week or two to move all the pictures and videos over seeing as there are close to 900 now but nothing will be lost.

Any problems at all, just email me. ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

EXTRA RACES FOR SUNDAY AFTERNOONS

IMPROMPTU RACING SERIES TO RESCUE CLUB AFTERNOONS

Notice of Racing: 15:00, Sundays.

An extra series of races is to be added to the summer racing programme from this coming Sunday, 26th July, at the request of the regular sailors and club users.

Many members have expressed concern and dismay that the activities on the water and around the club generally are ending too early in the day after the conclusion of the 13:30 race. Very few members turned out to cruise.

Many regular members have departed from the club at around 15:00 and the club was often almost deserted for the rest of the day, or at the very least experienced a marked general reduction of activity and loss of atmosphere.

As a result of this, a new series has been spontaneously arranged for 3pm on Sundays from now on.

The final details of the series will be decided by those that sign on next Sunday. One suggestion is to use the races as a fundraiser for the RNLI by asking for donations of 50p or a pound for each race. Turn up, sign on and help sort out a format for the series. There’s even talk of a new trophy perhaps being awarded.
