SALTFORD SAILORS ENJOY WINDY WEEKEND

The annual two-day racing regatta at Bristol Avon Sailing Club provided both members and visiting helms with enjoyable and sometimes testing racing and cruising conditions on Saturday and Sunday, 11 and 12 July.

Freshening winds from the south west early in the weekend and swinging round to the west  and gaining in strength on Sunday, kept crews on their toes and their toes under the toestraps on the river. Starts were split into separate flights because of the number of entries.

The club welcomed a fleet of eight helms and their British Moths from Frampton on Severn SC, the first time the Moth fleet has dropped in on BASC since 2000.

The Moths were given a separate start from the home sailors and they fought hard amongst themselves for the Padfield Trophy – a solid silver trophy donated by farmer Graham Padfield of Kelston in the 1950s. His family supported the event and added a selection of the family’s famous cheeses to the prizes. The trophy was won by Roger Witts in British Moth 871.

The regatta is the club’s premier open event of the year and around 30 boats signed on to race over the weekend, with many more out cruising.

The regatta three race series was won in emphatic style by Jeremy Fisher in his Lightning, with Colin Carle (Lightning) second, and Bob Corfield and Caroline Howard (Mercury) in third place.  Jeremy also took the class prize.

The novice race on Saturday was well won by Sebastian Howard (Graduate) and the Sunday race by Caroline Howard (Topper). The battle in these races between the Howard mum and offspring – both graduates of the club’s annual RYA sail training course - was one of the highlights of the weekend.

The pursuit race was hard fought with Jeremy Fisher again taking top honours followed by sister Louise Olejnik (Topper) and Colin Carle.

The event was superbly served by the galley team of Gina Shepperd, Sharon Hooper and many others who kept the sailors and social visitors well supplied with refreshments. Sharon Hooper must also be mentioned for being responsible for bringing the Moth fleet down on us through a contact she has. Well done Shaz.

Bristol Avon SC Commodore Simon Woollen said: “The racing was quite hard at times, but thoroughly enjoyable for all concerned. A great time was had by all.

"Huge thanks must go to everyone who pitched in with their time in the race hut, rescue boats, bar and setting up and clearing away. "
